1.Could you tell us about your career?
Back in the early 1990’s I was helping a Dial-Up ISP and started talking with people there who were registering domain names for a real estate investor. He’d registered Libya.com, Weed.com, and many many others. One thing led to another and I sold my first domain in 1996 for $3,000. I then started a Domain Registration website (YourNameFree.com), bought a DNS Service (MyDomain.com) and then started an ICANN Registrar (NamesDirect.com). After we merged with NameZero I moved back to Canada and started investing in domain names as a domainer. In 2013 I started the NamesCon conference and we have grown quickly. We expect to have about 1500 people attend this coming January in Las Vegas. www.NamesCon.com
2.Would you like to introduce the DOMAINfest-asiaconference ? And what has been achieved in this DOMAINfest-asiaconference ?
DomainFest Asia has been an exploration into networking in Asia. The event has shown that those outside of Asia are eager to meet with and network with those in Asia. Look for big things to come next year in this space with NamesCon’s backing!
3.What is the core value of NamesCon and now it is achieved ?
The core value of NamesCon has always been to deliver business networking in a fun setting. While we achieve that every year, the opportunities change every year so it becomes a new goal to chase every year for us. We learn what works and what does not and make changes to the conference each time. We are proud to hear the success stories told to us by happy attendees.
4.What are the benefits for Chinese domain registry & domain investors ?
Bridging the gap between Chinese and Western businesses is the unique benefit of attending NamesCon. Everyone is friendly and open to talking. And the Chinese market is unique, changing and ripe for opportunity. At NamesCon we create a setting where talking, networking and dining with fellow attendees is easy and encouraged. I highly encourage your presence at Namescon.
5.Do you know that the East Asian nation in the investment field believe in small probability events. So their investment strategy will
be more adventurous, how do you think?
What is amazing about the domain investing business is that there are many ways to create value. You can take a risky or adventurous route, or you can take lower risk and make up for it in volume by selling through a larger number of domains per year. It would be excellent for domain investors to share stories to learn from each other based on past adventurous investments!
6.There is a brand category in New gtlds, application fee is only 185,000 US dollars and 25,000 US dollars per year maintenance
costs. What will be the impact of the traditional .com domain name ? If the ICANN open application again.
As more and more new gtlds come on board the value of .com will continue to rise. People have a natural tendency to assume that a domain name ends in .com so this will hold true for almost any domain in a new TLD. For the owner of a non dot com domain, there will always be loss to the .com version. I believe the new gtlds would see record numbers of new gtld applications come in if ICANN opens the application process again.
7.Family support in the domain name investment is very important, at least in China. Is that the same in America ? Would you like to talk?
I believe this rings true for any small business owner. Family support and balanced lifestyle are two very important factors in this business. Life-Work balance varies from area to area in North America but here in Canada it is extremely important.
8.What’s the most memorable thing about NamesCon ?
Every year the opening day gets bigger and bigger. The most memorable thing about NamesCon was when I was reviewing the names of the conference passes and realized that I didn’t know a lot of the people who were registering. It’s one thing to hold an event and have your friends and family arrive, but it’s humbling when people you don’t know are buy conference passes.
9.In many cases, companies prefer to initiate arbitration, even do not buy it to contemplate its price lower than the arbitration fee. Chinese think buy is a good way to solve it that save time and money. Could you tell us why more large companies are willing to arbitrate ?
In my opinion, large companies are often more willing to go to arbitration (using the UDRP) rather than buying a domain because they fear that the domain will transfer to a non-English speaking registrar and they will be presented with a large purchase price. The cost of filing a UDRP is often much more affordable than trying to buy the domain name.
10.Which is your most successful domain name case so far?
I would have to say CreditCheck.com and FreeCreditCheck.com which I purchased from two different people at the exact same time. I was then able to sell these domains for a substantial profit, even after having monetizing these domains for about 1 year.
Hope to see everyone in January!
All the best,
